Jets Awarded Multiple Compensatory Draft Picks
Free agency may begin in just a few days, but an even more exciting announcement has been made.
Compensatory draft picks!
Jokes aside, the NFL unveiled the official cap pick designations for each team entering the 2024 Draft. Teams that lost free agents from the 2023 offseason are rewarded with extra draft picks the following draft. The bigger contract a player gets for one team, the better the comp pick given to the organization thar originally had him.
The New York Jets officially will have three comp picks given to them in April’s Draft. The NFL awarded Gang Green a sixth-round (No. 218) and two seventh-round selections (No. 256 and 257). The selections came due to the Jets losing defensive tackles Nathan Shepherd, Sheldon Rankins, and quarterback Mike White. New York signed Allen Lazard, and Mecole Hardman as players who counted against the comp pick formula.
The three extra draft picks will give the Jets eight total in April. They currently own the 10th overall selection in the first round but do not own a second-round pick.
New York will expect to have a complex offseason in 2024. With close to $27 million in salary cap space, the Jets are expected to be aggressive in free agency, but could lose pass rushing dynamo Bryce Huff to the open market.
Jets Trade Rumors: Zach Wilson to NFC North?
Should Huff's contract come out to over $20 million annually as he is pushing for, the Jets could receive as high as a third-round compensatory pick next offseason.
While we're still a ways away from the 2025 Draft, New York can be pleased to know they have some late-round trade ammo if necessary to stay even more aggressive during the current offseason.
