Jets Draft Profile: Auburn Safety Jaylin Simpson
With the start of the new NFL year fast approaching, the New York Jets may find themselves in need of a versatile presence in their defensive backfield — primarily at safety.
Despite boasting one of the league’s top cornerback groups — headlined by two-time first-team All Pro Sauce Garner and D.J. Reed — the Jets safeties group struggled in pass defense last season.
Should the team choose to upgrade their performance in the mid-rounds of April’s draft, the Jets may wish to keep an eye on Auburn’s Jaylin Simpson.
Simpson was a good defender for Auburn during his senior year, as well as a standout special teamer. In 2023, Simpson recorded 38 tackles, four interception and three passes defended. Having taken 650 defensive snaps, the 6-1, 178-pounder spent most of his time in the deep saftey role (299 snaps,) while taking 150 as a box safety. The Brunswick, Georgia native also played 195 snaps as a slot cornerback. For his efforts, Simpson was provided an overall grade of 76.9 by Pro Football Focus.
Though he may be a bit underweight for NFL contact, Simpon’s above-average football IQ should make him a dependable defender in downfield coverage. As such, Simpson could be a solid reserve option with the ability to contributes on special teams, and the skill set to develop into a bigger role.
Jets, C.J. Mosley Sign To New Deal, Save Plenty of Cap Space
With safeties Jordan Whitehead and Ashtyn Davis having left via free agency, New York will almost certainly address the position, either through the Draft or free agency. Though the Jets are widely expected to seek offensive help with the No. 10 overall selection, they may look to fill a position of need with a promising, young option either on Day 3.
Third-year free safety Tony Adams, newly re-signed Chuck Clark and rookie defensive back Jarrick Bernard-Converse are the members of New York’s positional group signed for next season.
