Jets Considering Star Quarterback After Standout Combine Performance?

The New York Jets may be wise to give a strong look to Washington quarterback and NFL Scouting Combine standout Michael Penix, Jr. as a potential backup and heir-apparent to starter Aaron Rodgers.

Less than one month ago, former Washington quarterback, and NFL Draft hopeful, Michael Penix, Jr. expressed an interest in working alongside New York Jets starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers

Will his standout performance at last week’s NFL Scouting Combine put the talented signal-caller on Gang Green’s radar?

With New York expected to explore trade options for 2021 No. 2 overall selection Zach Wilson, the Jets are purportedly in the market for Rodgers’ backup. To do so, they may look to the Draft to fill the role. As such, Penix might be among the Jets considerations. If so, that would seem to suit the prolific prospect just fine.

"Being able to pick Aaron Rodgers's brain— a Hall of Famer, one of the best to ever do it in the sport —that would be amazing to be able to be around him, said Penix while speaking to ESPN 98.7 FM Radio's Jake Asman last month. "Any opportunity I'll be super blessed for and I'm gonna make the most of it."

Penix’s upside makes him an intriguing option for New York. The Heisman finalist threw for 4,903 yards, 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2023.

With top-five prospects Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels opting out of Combine workouts, Penix seized the opportunity to showcase his talents on a national stage. The 23-year-old exhibited his arm strength on both deep passes and targets on outs and comebacks. He finished the day with a perfect end zone fade to his Washington teammate Rome Odunze.

Still, there are concerns about Penix’s ability to adapt to the pro level. During the second half of his 2023 campaign, he had some issues with accuracy and his footwork — leading to oftentimes simple missed connections with his receivers. Though his shoulder injury was likely a factor in his regression, Penix will need to show that he is both healthy and fundamentally prepared for the NFL.

While it is highly improbable New York considers him with the No. 10 overall pick, he could be an option if they decide to package the pick to maximize their return on investment.
