Jets' Free-Agent Signings Close Door on Jefferson, Woods?

The New York Jets have added defensive tackles Javon Kinlaw and Leki Fotu. What does that mean for the future of veterans Quinton Jefferson and Al Woods?
In this story:

Defensive tackles Quinton Jefferson and Al Woods served as productive rotational pieces after signing one-year contracts with the New York Jets in 2023, but it appears that the team is moving in a different direction this offseason.

With All-Pro Quinnen Williams locked up long term, the Jets added two free agents to the interior of their defensive line this week. First, New York reached an agreement with former San Francisco 49ers' first-round draft pick Javon Kinlaw. One day later, it was reported that Gang Green had agreed to terms with former Arizona Cardinals' fourth-rounder Leki Fotu.

The two signings significantly decrease the chances of Jefferson or Woods returning. Set to turn 31 years old on March 31, Jefferson made a career-high 6.0 sacks over 14 appearances (14 starts) last year. After a hot start, Woods, who will turn 37 years old later this month, had his season reduced to six games by an Achilles injury. Both men ended the season on Injured Reserve.

The 26-year-old Kinlaw played a full season for the first time in 2023, recording a career-high 3.5 sacks and three pass deflections for the NFC champion 49ers. He has played anywhere from 40-60 percent of his teams defensive snaps in any given game.

Fotu, a massive roadblock in the middle of the defense, appears suited for a similar role to the one played by Woods. The run stuffer also logged 2.5 sacks in 11 games for the Cardinals last fall. The 25-year-old Fotu played 56 games (21 starts) since being drafted in 2020.

Kinlaw and Fotu make the Jets a lot younger at the defensive tackle spot although there is still another spot, or two, to fill.

It won't be a surprise if New York decides to bring defensive tackle Solomon Thomas back on a team-friendly contract. He's a good fit for the Jets' defensive system and is well respected as the organization's Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee.
