High 5: Best Free-Agent Signings For Jets

To take advantage of 40-year-old Aaron Rodgers' small window, the New York Jets in free agency need to add multiple vital pieces.
In this story:

No way around it - and regardless that Aaron Rodgers doesn't approve of the term - this offseason the New York Jets are rebuilding. The 40-year-old quarterback prefers "retooling," but that it doesn't change the size or scope of the project.

Despite losing his top two lieutenants to other jobs, Jets general manager Joe Douglas is tasked with adding at least three new starters to the offensive line, a playmaking receiver, a safety and at least one defensive tackle.

Oh and do it, mind you, with only $25 million in room under the salary cap. Should Douglas need a cheat sheet, he's in luck.

Our Top 5 free agents that could help the Jets in 2024 ... and beyond.

Jets - Tyron Smith cowboys

1. Tyron Smith, OT - The Cowboys' eight-time Pro Bowl stud left tackle is only 33 and coming off one of his best, healthiest seasons. If the Jets nab them, they would relieve the pressure of having to use the No. 10 overall pick on the same position. Or they could take a right tackle and groom him to be the left tackle of the future.

2. Ezra Cleveland, OG - Had Douglas not whiffed on Laken Tomlinson he wouldn't need a premier guard, but here we are. Cleveland, from the Jaguars, is 26 and would immediately upgrade New York's hole at left guard.

3. Michael Thomas, WR - A cost-effective veteran with enough in the tank and a Super Bowl hole on his resume. Rodgers needs a weapon opposite Garrett Wilson, since none of Packers' re-treads worked out.

4. Andre James, C - Whether it's the former Raider or Aaron Brewer (Titans), the Jets have to prioritize a starter who can play both guard and center.

Jets Interested In Seahawks' Safety Not Named Jamal Adams?

5. Jordan Whitehead, S - Forget the Jamal Adams reunion nonsense, the Jets need to keep one of their own to keep one of the NFL's best defenses intact. Sign Seattle's Quadre Diggs, and now we're talking.
