Saleh Speaks on Jets' Job Security, Mentions 'Two Types of Coaches'
The New York Jets have lost six of their last seven games and have been officially eliminated from AFC Playoffs contention.
It doesn't appear, however, that New York's ownership plans on sacrificing head coach Robert Saleh after the disappointing season comes to a close. Speaking to reporters one day following a 30-0 road loss to Miami, Saleh answered questions about his job security.
"I'm just coaching trying to beat Washington," said Saleh on Monday. "Two types of coaches — those who have been fired and those who are about get fired. We coach in the moment. We coach to win a football game."
The Jets (5-9) will try to win for the sixth time this season when they host the Washington Commanders (4-10) in the December 24 home finale. As for the possibility of making any coaching staff changes prior to the Week 16 matchup, Saleh said, simply, "no."
In defense of Saleh, the realistic expectations for the 2023 Jets changed dramatically four offensive snaps into the season when Aaron Rodgers ruptured his Achilles. Meanwhile, the offensive line has struggled to both stay healthy and protect the quarterback. The offense ranks last overall in the NFL with 255.1 yards per game.
The Jets are guaranteed to finish with a losing record for the third year in a row under Saleh's direction. The head coach owns a 16-32 record since taking over in 2021.
Saleh also claimed to be on good terms with team owner Woody Johnson.
"Woody's been great. I talk to him every day and we're always talking game plan," said Saleh on Monday.
