SI's Albert Breer Delivers Aaron Rodgers Jets Prediction in Weekly Mailbag

The senior reporter shared thoughts on the Rodgers' trade negotiations and Odell Beckham's next home

It could happen at any minute and no one wants to miss this news.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer has speculated that the New York Jets’ trade for quarterback Aaron Rodgers could be completed sooner than later.

“I think it could happen as early as this week, and certainly will get done before the draft. So have patience, Jets fans—your quarterback is coming,” wrote Breer in his latest SI.com mailbag.

With the teams still reportedly negotiating over satisfactory trade compensation for the 39-year old signal caller, Breer suggests the relationship between the teams’ general managers will aid the process.

“I think it’ll happen sooner than people think because I don’t think things between the Packers and Jets are in nearly as bad a place as some seem to believe they are. We mentioned earlier in the week the rapport between GMs Joe Douglas and Brian Gutekunst from their time coming up as young road scouts. The two head coaches, Robert Saleh and Matt LaFleur, are best friends. So any raw feelings between Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, I think, are manageable, because of the relationships in place." - from Albert Breer’s mailbag

While speaking to a media scrum at the NFL Owners’ Meetings, Douglas did not sound willing to part with the Jets’ 2023 first-round pick.

“Where I’m from, every pick is important. Obviously, the 13th pick is a high pick in the round, so you really have a great opportunity to bring in a strong player,” said Douglas. “Picking in the top 15, picking in the top 20, the odds of hitting on those guys usually go up.”

Breer, however, does not think it will wind up costing Gang Green that much to finally secure its starting quarterback.

“I’d put it at either the 42nd or 43rd pick, and a conditional pick or picks down the line,” wrote Breer.

The Jets recently acquired the No. 42 overall selection by dealing receiver Elijah Moore to the Cleveland Browns.

Breer also weighed in on free agent receiver Odell Beckham, who was seen embracing Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh at the NFL Owners’ Meetings.

“To me, this comes down to what Beckham wants, from money to geography to coaching to winning,” wrote Breer, who also noted that Beckham’s asking price has apparently dropped to around $15 million per year.
