WATCH: Ranking the five greatest coaches in New York Jets history
There's an excitement in the air for the New York Jets and a major reason is because of their new head coach. Adam Gase has earned high praise throughout the league, including from legendary quarterback Peyton Manning.
In his first season with the Jets, Gase has good talent to work with on offense and defense including Sam Darnold, Le'Veon Bell, Jamal Adams and C.J. Mosley. If everything breaks right, earning a Wild Card berth could even be in the works.
So with that said, as Gase begins his tenure in New York, let's rank the top five Jets coaches of all time.
5. Joe Walton
Walton was the offensive coordinator for the Jets from 1981-1982 before becoming the head coach from 1983-1989. He led an explosive offense, guiding the team to back-to-back playoff berths in 1985-1986 (11-5 and 10-6 records).
Walton was eventually fired after the 1989 season with an overall 53-57-1 record as head coach.
4. Herm Edwards
Even though he has a 2-3 record in the playoffs, Edwards brought the Jets to the second most playoff appearances in franchise history. And even though he has a 39-41 overall record as head coach, three out of those five seasons, he had a winning record.
The Fort Monmouth, NJ native really doesn't get enough credit for his time as Jets coach and is more infamously known for his "You play to win the game" speech.
It's easy to forget that the Jets were 2-5 when he gave that speech, and after that speech the team went 7-2, won their division (the only division title in their last 20 seasons), and beat Peyton Manning and the Colts 41-0 in a Wild Card matchup.
The first ever African-American pro football coach for a New York team hands down deserves to be on this list.
3. Rex Ryan
With the most playoff wins and best playoff win percentage of all Jets coaches, you could argue Ryan should be ranked second on this list.
Four out of his six seasons were .500 or better and he brought the team to back-to-back AFC Championship appearances.
Ryan is one of the best defensive minds in NFL history, but his downfall was his inability to create a talented offensive group, and if he was able to he'd probably still be head coach.
2. Bill Parcells
The Hall of Fame coach is a given here, regardless of his limited playoff success with the Jets.
He has the best winning percentage in franchise history (.604) with no losing seasons. Parcells led the Jets to a franchise best 12-4 record in 1998, only two seasons after the team posted a franchise-worst 1-15 mark.
He is the only Jets coach to leave the team with a winning record after coaching at least two seasons. If Parcells didn't retire as head coach in 1999, it makes you think how successful the team could've been.
1. Weeb Ewbank
It's been over 50 seasons since the Jets won a Super Bowl, and the credit for that only championship goes to Ewbank. He had a 71-76-6 record as head coach, coaching the team from 1963-1973.
He's the only coach to win titles in both the National Football League and the American Football League.
He has the franchise's second best regular season record, when the team went 11-3 in 1968 and captured the ultimate prize with Joe Namath as quarterback.
The last six Jets head coaches have had a winning record in their first season. Will Gase make it seven? Will he be the next great Jets coach? With a talented roster this season, Jets fans can only hope.
