2023 Jets Country Player Profile: CB D.J. Reed (4)
Moving toward final NFL roster cutdowns while counting up the New York Jets' numerical roster, the Jets Country player profile series features the CB2 who wears jersey No. 4 — D.J. Reed.
Sauce Gardner on one side and Reed on the other make for a formidable cornerback duo, arguably one of the league's best.
Both men are entering their second seasons in Green & White. Gardner was the Jets' top draft pick in 2022 while Reed inked a free-agent deal to re-unite with Robert Saleh last spring.
"I had a wish list," said Saleh, who knows Reed from the 2018-19 campaigns with San Francisco. "Guys who I’ve worked with and are very familiar with my messaging, very familiar with our scheme who can come in and play."
In his first year with Gang Green, Reed started all 17 regular season contests for the NFL's fourth-ranked defense. He limited opposing receivers to 5.8 yards per target.
"I definitely want to get better," said Reed after a Phase 3 OTAs practice. "I went over with my get-betters with my coach T.O. [Tony Oden]. So, I definitely can improve on several things."
Reed totaled 12 passes defensed, but corralled only one interception last fall.
"This is my second year in the defense, so I feel like I'm going to play better this year than last year, just from being out there for my second year," said Reed, a former fifth-round draft pick out of Kansas State.
