The Lions couldn't have asked for anything more from David Montgomery in his first season in Detroit.

Last offseason, Lions general manager Brad Holmes targeted Montgomery to replace the production of Jamaal Williams, and proceeded to ink Montgomery to a three-year, $18 million contract.

The signing of Montgomery, who spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Chicago Bears, proved to be well worth it.

He more than adequately filled the void left by Williams (who signed with the Saints last spring), rushing for 1,015 yards and a career-best 13 touchdowns. He also accumulated a career-high 4.6 yards per carry and a career-best 72.5 rushing yards a game. Meanwhile, he contributed 16 receptions and 117 yards as a pass-catcher.

Additionally, he formed an electric, one-two punch in the Lions’ backfield with 2023 rookie phenom Jahmyr Gibbs.

The duo amassed a combined 1,960 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground a season ago. And, because of such, the expectation from many Detroit fans is that the Montgomery-Gibbs tandem will total 2,000 yards on the ground in 2024.

Montgomery enjoyed a “special” first season in the Motor City. And, via his production on the field, he endeared himself to the city and its rabid fanbase.

“This is second to none. I’ve never been a part of or seen anything like it,” Montgomery said during the Lions’ playoff run. “Like, just the way that this place, this city, you can feel how authentic it is. You can feel the love and warmth from the entire city. So, just being a part of it is special.”

At this present juncture, I'm willing to predict that Montgomery rushes 220 times for 946 yards – good for 4.3 yards a carry – and eight touchdowns in his second season in Motown.
