2024 Stat Prediction for Jahmyr Gibbs
There's no denying the fact that Jahmyr Gibbs, the Lions’ first of two first-round picks last April (No. 12 overall), produced a solid rookie campaign.
Initially, there was a lot of naysaying regarding Detroit general manager Brad Holmes taking a running back that high in the draft (and after trading down from the No. 6 pick). Based on so-called positional value, it wasn't deemed to be a wise pick by Holmes.
Gibbs, however, silenced those critics more and more as the 2023 season progressed and he became increasingly productive.
Gibbs, a product of the University of Alabama, ended up becoming a dynamic two-way threat for the Lions at the running back position. He racked up 945 yards and 10 touchdowns as a runner, plus another 316 yards and an additional score as a receiver.
And, he formed a potent one-two punch with veteran running back David Montgomery. He and Montgomery combined for 1,960 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground. Plus, each amassed north of 4.5 yards per carry (Gibbs led the two with an impressive 5.2 yards a rush).
Gibbs’ coming-out-party came in Week 8, when he rushed for a career-best 152 yards against the Las Vegas Raiders. Additionally, he amassed 100 rushing yards once more in Week 15 against the Denver Broncos (100 yards on 11 carries).
Additionally, in 2023, Gibbs became just the 11th rookie in NFL history to accumulate at least 945 rushing yards and 10 rushing scores while averaging more than 5.0 yards per carry.
The ex-Crimson Tide standout joined Saquon Barkley as the only players among the 11 who also recorded at least 52 catches in their rookie campaign.
And, to no surprise, he was named a Pro Bowler for his efforts.
For as good as Gibbs was as a first-year pro, Holmes believes he can be even better in 2024.
“He actually recognized that he was going a little too fast. And early on, he was,” Holmes said of Gibbs at the NFL scouting combine in early March. “He’s such a fast, explosive player, he was almost going too fast. And, once he kind of caught up to the speed of the game and realized, ‘You know what? I know I’m fast. I trust my speed. I know I’m explosive. I don’t need to go so fast.’ And so, that’s when I think his vision started to get a lot better.
“We never really had any concerns about his vision. But, once he figured out the speed at which he needed to play and got up to that speed, he became the player that we thought we were going to get. And, again, I think he’s got a whole lot more left in the tank.”
At this present juncture, I'm willing to predict that Gibbs rushes for 851 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2024. Plus, I believe that he'll accumulate another 330 yards and four scores as a pass-catcher in his second year as a pro.
