Lions Host CB Andru Phillips on Top-30 Visit
The Detroit Lions have identified the cornerback position as one of need throughout the 2024 NFL offseason.
Throughout the free agency and pre-Draft process, the Lions have made several moves to signify a need to upgrade at the cornerback position. Among the cornerbacks they're evaluating ahead of the NFL Draft is Kentucky's Andru Phillips, who has reportedly taken a top-30 visit with the organization.
Phillips is a popular prospect in this year's class, as he has taken top-30 visits with at least seven teams, according to The Draft Network. He is the fourth cornerback to reportedly take a Top-30 visit with the Lions, joining Kool-Aid McKinstry, Qwan'Tez Stiggers and Nehemiah Pritchett.
Other top-30 visits for the Lions include Northern Iowa defensive tackle Khristian Boyd and Utah safey/running back Sione Vaki.
According to reports, Phillips has also met with the Chicago Bears, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers among other teams during this process.
The Kentucky product allowed an opposing passer rating of 112.6 last season, according to Pro Football Focus. Opposing passers completed 39-of-58 passes for 438 yards and four touchdowns. Phillips did not record an interception in any of his four collegiate seasons.
He had a total of 82 tackles over four years, three of which were for loss. Phillips is tabbed as an eventual nickel cornerback at the professional season.
He finished the 2023 campaign with a 71.7 PFF overall defensive rating last year. The defender did struggle last season, but there are intangible elements of his play style that could help him translate to a nice professional career.
The Lions currently hold the No. 29 overall pick amongst a total of seven selection in this year's Draft, which begins Thursday, April 25 and will be hosted in Detroit.
