Detroit Lions Re-Sign Nate Sudfeld

Veteran quarterback returns for another season in Detroit.

The Detroit Lions have re-signed veteran quarterback Nate Sudfeld, the team announced on social media.

Sudfeld will presumably be in competition with Hendon Hooker to earn the backup role behind veteran signal-caller Jared Goff.

Hooker, despite being the scout team quarterback at the end of the season, does not have much playing experiencing in either the preseason or during the regular season.

The veteran backup joined the Lions back in 2022, but spent the entirety of the 2023 season on the injured reserve list, after tearing his ACL in training camp.

Detroit's coaching staff likely felt that Sudfeld would again provide a supporting role in the quarterbacks room.

With Teddy Bridgewater retiring and David Blough moving on to become an assistant quarterbacks coach in Washington, Detroit's coaching staff and Mark Brunell likely felt comfortable with the 30-year-old returning for another season.

Dan Campbell raising the standards

After a season in which the team was 30 minutes away from appearing in the Super Bowl, head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged at the annual league meeting the standards would again be quite elevated all throughout the 2024 season.

“That’s what we’ve made it. That’s what we’ve collectively done. We’ve raised the standards and now we can’t accept anything less than that," said Campbell. "If we’re gonna say that, that requires a lot of work and a lot of focus, a lot of intensity, a lot of urgency. And, oh, by the way, it’s got to be better than last year.”
