2023 Stat Prediction for Cam Sutton
Cornerback Cam Sutton, a free-agent acquisition of the Lions over the offseason, will be part of a revamped secondary in Detroit.
Along with Sutton, Lions general manager Brad Holmes inked fellow defensive backs Emmanuel Moseley and C.J. Gardner-Johnson to contracts during the early portion of free agency.
Sutton arrives to the Motor City after spending the first six seasons of his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
While in Pittsburgh, Sutton – just like several of his Steelers teammates – developed a reputation for being a physical player.
Now, the veteran defensive back plans to bring that physical style of play to Detroit. And, he has his sights set on "punishing" opponents.
"I think we have a group that really just (has) tenacity. You know what I mean? We have a group that is really fiery and wants to get after guys," Sutton expressed earlier this offseason. "And, it’s just about making teams pay. Making them pay for little mistakes. Making the plays that we’re supposed to make. And you know, just punishing guys, you know, every time they touch the ball. And, that just sends a message, (and) not just for the first week, but through 17 weeks and beyond.”
The seventh-year pro is coming off a career-best campaign in Pittsburgh. It was a season in which he recorded career-high marks in both interceptions (three) and passes defensed (15).
Also, he allowed a passer rating of just 69.6 on throws his way a season ago. In stark contrast, Detroit's defense, as a whole, permitted a passer rating against of 94.2 last season.
For his career, Sutton has amassed a total of eight interceptions and 38 passes defensed. He's also accumulated 168 total tackles, two sacks and five forced fumbles.
As Sutton expressed upon signing in Detroit, he's beyond excited to get the chance to play for Lions head coach Dan Campbell.
"Seeing what he’s been doing around the league, it’s exhilarating, man. Guys love this guy, and that’s not just me speaking. You see this far-spread around the league. Guys want to play for him, guys love his energy and just everything that he brings to the game," Sutton said of Campbell during his introductory press conference. "He’s always going to be passionate about what he does, and you need that. You need someone who’s going to be head over heels, just trying to push you in the right direction and seeing what’s best for you, and someone who has that same belief in you (that you have in yourself)."
In his inaugural campaign in Detroit, I'm projecting that Sutton will record 48 total tackles, including two for loss, to go along with two interceptions and nine passes defensed.
