3 Teams That Could Trade for D'Andre Swift

Here are the three teams that could trade for Detroit Lions running back D'Andre Swift on Day 3 of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Going into the 2023 NFL Draft, speculation ran rampant that the Detroit Lions would be looking to move Swift for additional draft capital.

The Georgia product survived the first two days of the draft without being traded. But, it doesn’t mean he’s going to survive the third and final day.

Entering Day 3, rumors continue to swirl that Detroit general manager Brad Holmes will facilitate a draft-day deal involving the 2020 second-round pick.

With the Lions currently possessing just two Day 3 picks (No. 152 overall in the fifth round and No. 249 overall in the seventh round), it wouldn’t be surprising if Holmes demanded a fourth-or-fifth-rounder in return for the fourth-year back.

Without further ado, let’s take a look now at the three most feasible trade destinations for the running back.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals face a great deal of uncertainty with their running backs room headed into the 2023 season.

Lead back Joe Mixon's future is highly uncertain. Mixon, 26, is facing a misdemeanor aggravated menacing charge, stemming from a traffic incident in January. Subsequently, he could be asked to take a pay cut or face being a post-June 1 cut, which would create $10.1 million in salary-cap space for the Bengals.

Meanwhile, the depth at running back behind Mixon is extremely slim, especially after Samaje Perine departed the Bengals for the Denver Broncos in free agency.

Additionally, Cincinnati didn’t select a back during the first three rounds of the draft.

All of the above has potentially opened the door to the Bengals making a move to acquire Swift on Day 3.

Cincinnati also presently has both a fourth-round pick (No. 131 overall) and a fifth-round selection (No. 163 overall) in its possession. To me, it means that the Bengals are a viable landing spot for Swift, going into the final day of the 2023 draft.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys have already said goodbye to Ezekiel Elliott this offseason, and now they could potentially be saying hello to Swift.

If the 2023 campaign were to start today, Dallas would be opening the season with Tony Pollard as its No. 1 running back, without a lot behind him.

Enter Swift, who would serve as a perfect No. 2 back in the Cowboys’ backfield.

Additionally, headed into Day 3 of the draft, the Jerry Jones-led franchise is equipped with both a fourth-rounder (No. 129 overall) and a fifth-rounder (No. 169 overall). Offering either of those picks could be enough to land the Detroit back.

Philadelphia Eagles

The rich, as in the reigning NFC champion Eagles, could get richer by adding Swift.

Through the first three rounds of the draft, they’ve done a lot to add to their defense, including drafting both Georgia DT Jalen Carter and Bulldogs EDGE Nolan Smith in the first round. Now, they’d be wise to add some weapons to their offense, such as Swift.

Philadelphia general manager Howie Roseman already added Rashaad Penny to his team’s running backs room earlier this season. However, he could still be in the market for another back headed into Day 3 of the draft.

The Eagles don’t presently have a fourth-or-fifth-round pick – they pick next at No. 188 overall in the sixth round. However, if they were to get their hands on a fifth-rounder or the Lions were to lower their demands for Swift and settle for a sixth-round pick, Roseman & Co. could be walking out of the 2023 draft with the former Georgia runner.
