Bold Prediction: LaPorta Records Three Touchdowns on Bucs' Defense

Lions will lean on Sam LaPorta in the red zone.

The Detroit Lions' offense is among the most potent units in the National Football League.

When Detroit's front office invested an early draft pick this past April in tight end Sam LaPorta, there were several indications he would be able to have success early at the NFL level.

The former Hawkeyes tight end acclimated quickly to Ben Johnson's offense, and the chemistry with Jared Goff was established as early as rookie minicamp.

Even a hyperextended knee suffered in the regular season finale could not stop the talented tight end from suiting up against the Rams, in the Lions' first playoff game in several years.

“I would say the trusting of my knee is growing quite a bit, planting for cuts, and certainly the achiness has progressed,” LaPorta told reporters this week. “Just trying to make it feel better all week, and of course, get the right amount of work, but not too much at the same time.”

Against the Buccaneers' stout defense, Detroit may not find the red zone all that often. If drives end up being successful, look for LaPorta to find himself being a primary target in the red zone.

"I tell you, man, the kid just continues to impress. It’s one way or another. It’s what he does on the field. And listen, I know he only had the three catches for limited amount of yards, but the touchdown speaks for itself," Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said. "The third-and-21 that he did everything he needed to do just to get us a little bit closer to kick the field goal. And then, what he does in the run-game goes unappreciated by most. So, the guy, I mean, it’s incredible for a rookie. It really is.”

Last week, LaPorta played 45 offensive snaps, and secured three receptions for 13 yards in Detroit's 24-23 victory against Los Angeles.
