Chase Lucas Had Offers to Leave, Chose to Stay with Lions
Cornerback Chase Lucas gave himself the best opportunity to make Detroit's 53-man roster.
After last season, Detroit made a concerted effort to revamp the defense, notably in the secondary.
Finishing last or in the lower-third of several defensive categories forced the front office to bring in better talent.
After eventually being waived by the Lions, Lucas had other opportunities to leave, but made a decision regarding his NFL future.
Lucas had offers to join the practice squad of other NFL teams, but decided to remain with the Lions, according to SB Nation.
The former seventh-round pick gained the respect of teammates and the coaching staff, who regularly noticed his consistent work ethic and drive to improve his game.
In 2022, Lucas played in six games, with most of his contributions coming on special teams.
This preaseason, Lucas was in competition with several young defensive backs who competed for roster spots.
The young defensive back had a crucial interception at the end of the first half in the preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers.
In the finale, the 26-year-old recorded three tackles and three passes defensed.
Unfortunately, Lucas lost out to Steven Gilmore and Khalil Dorsey, two undrafted rookie free agents who made a solid impression all throughout training camp.
