Darius Slay Reacts to Matt Patricia Rumors
Things could be getting quite awkward for Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay.
It is no secret the talented defensive back had a massive issue with the way former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia treated him during his failed stint in Motown.
Slay has repeatedly expressed, since he departed Motown, that the former Patriots defensive coordinator disrespected him in front of the entire team early in his tenure.
As a result, the team decided to part ways with the popular cornerback, trading him to the Eagles in March of 2020.
Slay had expressed in January of 2020 that he wanted to retire as a member of the Lions. But, if a long-term contract could not be worked out, he would have been open to moving on.
“If they give me the contract, I’ll be blessed and fortunate enough for it,” Slay said. “Like I say, I always wanted to retire as a Detroit Lion. But, if it don’t happen, it’s cool. I’ll be alright. Like I said, if I don’t, somebody will be getting a great player.”
Over the weekend, rumors started to swirl that Patricia has an opportunity to secure a position as linebackers coach for the Eagles, under head coach Nick Sirianni.
Both Slay and Seattle Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs took to social media to debate Charles Woodson, who indicated Slay should still play at a high level, even if Patricia joins the coaching staff.
Diggs expressed, "Lol, all I'm gonna say is that the Eagles made Slay a captain and traded for him from the situation he was in with that coach.. So do you wanna put arguably your best defensive player/captain in that position?"
Over the past couple of seasons, Patricia has served in various roles for the New England Patriots, including in the role of offensive play-caller.
