Detroit Lions Waive WR Denzel Mims
The Detroit Lions have decided to move on from wide receiver Denzel Mims, waiving the former second-round pick ahead of the team's second preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
According to NFL media, a practice ankle injury then led to a calf injury during rehabilitation.
He had started his run in Detroit well, including appearing on special teams, work he had not previously done a significant amount during his playing days in college and with the New York Jets.
As a result of Detroit's front office moving on and Mims not making the 53-man roster coming out of training camp, the Lions will retain their conditional draft pick that was sent to the Jets as part of the initial trade.
The writing was on the wall that Detroit was likely planning to move on from the talented wideout. Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who normally praises his players, seemed quite reserved discussing Mims' injury status.
Detroit is likely going to add another wide receiver to the roster, as 2022 first-round pick Jameson Williams is not going to be available for the remainder of the preseason.
Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson wants to be aggressive in the passing game, but the options to pass deep are limited heading into the start of the season.
