Does WR Travis Fulgham Have a Chance to Make Lions' 53-Man Roster?

Evaluating Travis Fulgham's chances of making Lions' 53-man roster

In the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions and general manager Bob Quinn selected wide receiver Travis Fulgham out of Old Dominion.

The 6-foot-3 wideout couldn't crack the final cuts in preseason last year, but did latch on to the practice squad.

Due to injury, Fulgham was promoted to the 53-man roster in Week 15 last year.

While in college, Fulgham was one of the most productive deep-ball pass catchers.

He had 18 catches of 20-plus yards during his senior year at Old Dominion -- the second-most for receivers in his draft class.

Important to note, his level of competition was questionable.

Regardless, in offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell's aggressive downfield attack, Fulgham's skill set seems to match up well.

Now, Fulgham isn't a burner, but neither are Kenny Golladay or Marvin Jones Jr.

In the three games Fulgham saw playing time last year, he accumulated a total of 63 offensive snaps.

Of those snaps, he lined up 38 times on the outside and the rest mostly as a slot receiver.

Unfortunately, he didn't record a single catch.

To make matters worse, on his three total targets, Pro Football Focus credited him with two drops -- not ideal.

And the Lions have typically only kept four wide receivers on the roster the last couple of years, which definitely doesn't help Fulgham's odds.

Golladay, Jones and Danny Amendola are all virtual locks to make the roster, barring injury.

That leaves players like Marvin Hall, Geronimo Allison, Jamal Agnew and this year's fifth-round pick Quintez Cephus all fighting for one or maybe two roster spots.

Many have pegged Cephus as a favorite to make the roster -- almost solely due to his draft status.

However, Fulgham was only drafted 18 picks behind Cephus, if their respective draft years were merged.

Both players, subsequently, had similar draft capital used to secure their services.

Obviously, Fulgham has a year of NFL film to help judge his value at this point, and it wasn't anything too impressive.

Overall, Fulgham will have to absolutely show out in training camp to even be considered for the final 53-man roster. He is squarely on the outside looking in.

With that being said, there are always a few roster surprises every year.
