Lions Running Backs Coach Gives First Impression of Gibbs, Montgomery
Detroit Lions running backs coach Scottie Montgomery walked away from the offseason workouts impressed with the team's running back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.
Unfortunately, the ex-Bears running back did not participate in a large portion of the practices open to the media, but the team is happy with his current understanding of Ben Johnson's playbook.
"Good contrast, you know. Of course, two different types of skill sets. Really impressed with the way they've taken to the playbook," Montgomery told reporters. "I think that that speaks volumes about the level of professionalism. You know, we knew that David would have that just with his history."
For Gibbs, the 2023 No. 12 overall pick, a lot has been already given to him since he arrived at Allen Park. His performances steadily improved with each passing day at OTAs.
"Now seeing, Jah (Jahmyr Gibbs) come in with that same level of professionalism. Kind of knew that he would have it, because of his history over the last few years, as well. But, overall, mentally, two thumbs up. Physically, both flashed what we thought they could do. I thought 'Jah' really started to come on there at the end, just with the overall understanding of what we wanted him to do in the offense. Also, the details that comes with doing multiple deals, whether it be in protection, whether it be in the run game or being in the pass game."
With training camp approaching, it will be intriguing to observe how often the team deploys two running backs, given how contrasting both running backs are.
