Grading Lions' Pick of TE Sam LaPorta at No. 34

All Lions provides its grade for the Detroit Lions' selection of Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta at No. 34 overall.
In this story:

One thing is certain: The Lions are making a concerted effort to make their offense one of the best in the league in 2023.

Brad Holmes & Co. furthered that effort Friday night by skipping over defensive back Brian Branch and other defensive players to select tight end Sam LaPorta at No. 34 overall.

So, yes, the Lions have potentially found their long-term replacement for T.J. Hockenson with a fellow Iowa tight end.

The big-bodied LaPorta, standing in at 6-foot-4, 242 pounds, stood out as a pass-catcher during his time with the Hawkeyes.

In four years and 46 total games at Iowa, he amassed 153 receptions for 1,786 yards and five touchdowns. Additionally, according to Pro Football Focus, in 2021, he led all Big Ten tight ends in receptions (53), yards (670), yards after catch (299), yards after contact (206) and catches of 15-or-more yards (18).

And, all along the way, he showcased his natural running ability and prowess for making plays with the ball in his hands.

Prior to the draft, NFL Draft Bible said the following as part of its evaluation of LaPorta: “Exceptional reaction time, catching the front of the ball and getting upfield. Physical after the catch, making defenders bring their weight with them. Better agility than you think, cutting against defenders’ positioning and into green grass.”

Although he only received a third-round grade from NFL Draft Bible, he seems to have all the traits of a No. 1 tight end at the next level. And, I believe he’ll have a great shot at sliding into the starting role as a rookie.

LaPorta told reporters after being drafted that he is looking forward to learning from Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who played at the tight end position for 10 years at the NFL level.

Recall, the talented tight end had a positive formal interview with the Lions at the Scouting Combine. He recalled being able to successfully draw a play on the board after meeting Detroit's coaching staff.

For all the above reasons, I give Holmes & Co. a solid “B” grade for their selection of LaPorta at No. 34.
