Jamaal Williams: Lions Showed They Really Didn't Want Me
Jamaal Williams felt the Detroit Lions' contract offer did not do enough to show the organization was committed to him.
After joining the team in 2021, the veteran running back quickly emerged as a leader, both on and off the football field.
“The offer they gave me, I felt like was disrespectful and showing that they really didn’t want me to be there," Williams said at his New Orleans Saints introductory press conference.
According to reports, the Lions' front office made an offer that was similar in nature to David Montgomery's.
When Williams' management shopped around for potentially bigger and better offers, Detroit likely pivoted quickly and moved to their next option, to ensure it locked up a running back for the 2023 season.
Montgomery was subsequently inked to a three-year, $18 million contract that included $11 million in guarantees.
"To get an opportunity to come here and play with a team that’s starting something crazy, being able to say that I’m a part of it, I’m blessed," Montgomery said. "I feel very, very excited to be able to get in the offense that’s so powerful and dynamic. So, I’m excited to be here."
Detroit's former running back does not harbor any ill-will, as he even joked with Saints reporters and showcased his infectious personality.
“It’s all love for Detroit,” Williams said. “Like, I know my teammates, everybody there at the Detroit Lions got love for me and all that. But, at the same time, we couldn’t come to terms and -- it’s just funny, that’s all.”
