Jared Goff Asked About Adding WR Deebo Samuel
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff arrived to his media session at the team's practice facility on Thursday morning donning a "Salty" long-sleeved t-shirt.
"I was just wearing this in the workout," Goff explained. "This is nothing to do with a statement or anything. This is a shirt we had last year."
While he denied any hidden meanings regarding the workout attire, many supporters could understand why the veteran signal-caller might not be the most comfortable player on the roster.
Despite all the potential aspects of playing in Detroit that are unsettling, having increased familiarity has been beneficial to Goff.
"Definitely a lot more comfortable. I'm familiar with the building. I'm familiar with the people. I'm familiar with the coaches," Goff said. "You kind of know where you're going around the building now, as opposed to a year ago learning things. So, yeah, I feel great. I feel comfortable, and I'm excited about it."
The Los Angeles Rams, the team that made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, are coming off an impressive playoff run that culminated in a Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
"I said this a few months ago. I was happy for them," he explained. "So many friends, so many lifelong friends, so many teammates, coaches that I was with for so long that I know were striving for that for so long, that were able to accomplish it. They earned it. They deserve that. They worked hard, and earned it. So, we're so happy for them."
Expectations will continue to grow, as the 27-year-old signal-caller enters his second season in Motown.
Even though Goff could have an added chip on his shoulder, this season will be about continuing to improve.
"For me personally, just continuing to get better. It has nothing to do with what they've done. I need to get better myself, and bring the Lions where we need to be."
Hearing Deebo Samuel has requested to be traded
The Lions' offense, along with several other NFL teams, would benefit from adding wideout Deebo Samuel to its roster.
Goff was asked directly about his reaction to hearing a player of Samuel's caliber asking to be traded and whether he's given thought to how good he would look donning a Lions uniform.
"Of course. He's a great player and one of the best in the league. Yeah. Not up to me," Goff said. "You guys have to ask Brad (Holmes) all these questions. You know, not for me."
Lions draft talk
Among the biggest unanswered draft questions that Lions supporters have involves whether or not the team will draft a quarterback this year.
Goff has continued to remain diplomatic, expressing he would welcome the opportunity to mentor a young player, an aspect he has yet to experience in his career.
"No. You know, whatever it is, I trust those guys (Detroit's front office). They've expressed a lot of confidence in me, and I feel good about where I'm at, where I'm at with that and where we're headed," Goff commented. "I'm excited about it. If anything were to happen there, I have no concern and trust those guys upstairs."
Goff added, "There's no way for me to control it. I don't know. What do I make of the talk? The talk is always just talk. If it happens, great. I'll deal with it from there and be the best player I can be. If it doesn't, then you guys won't talk about it again. That's the way the media cycle works. Again, I trust those guys up top. Like I said, they've expressed confidence in me, so it's nice."
