After spending one year in Detroit, senior offensive assistant John Morton has left to join the staff of Sean Payton with the Denver Broncos.

He will serve as the Broncos passing game coordinator under new offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.

After serving as USC's offensive coordinator for two seasons (2009-2010), the experienced NFL coach had stints with the 49ers (2011-2014), Saints (2015-2016), Jets (2017) and Raiders (2019-2021).

Morton's departure is the third this offseason from the staff of head coach Dan Campbell, as running backs coach Duce Staley and defensive line coach Todd Wash have also departed the organization.

Steve Heiden was hired to be the team's tight ends coach, while Dre Bly is the new cornerbacks coach.

Scottie Montgomery was hired to replace Staley, who departed to  be closer to his mother.

Here is a collection of the top Lions news this week:

  • USA Today's LionsWire has four questions that should be asked to general manager Brad Holmes when he speaks to the media on Wednesday.
  • Detroit Free Press writer Carlos Monarrez disagrees with the decision made to give defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn a new contract extension.
  • ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler had a report on Sunday discussing what he has learned from other NFL teams about the potential of the Lions landing cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

  • NFL.com explored each team's running back situation heading into the 2023 season.

"(Jamaal) Williams is a priority free agent for the Lions," writes Kevin Patra. "His ability to smash the ball into the end zone was unparalleled in 2022, when he scored a league-high 17 rushing TDs. The veteran plays tough, hits the hole hard and was critical to a good Lions ground attack. The big question is how much GM Brad Holmes will shell out to keep him in Honolulu Blue. If Detroit can keep Williams, the backfield is well-positioned. Swift is a dynamic talent but has proven he's best with a solid running mate to share the load."
