Lions' 2023 Schedule Tracker, Leaks, Rumors

Could the Lions open the 2023 season on national television?
In this story:

Could the Detroit Lions open the 2023 season in primetime against the defending Super Bowl champions?

A season ago, the organization did not have any scheduled primetime games.

The Lions' only national night game came when their season finale against Green Bay was flexed to Sunday Night Football.

The matchup is intriguing, if it eventually ends up being the opener for Detroit. Kansas City is a favorite to repeat as champions, while the Lions are favorites in the NFC North.

Kansas City's Andy Reid and Detroit's Dan Campbell are two of the NFL's most popular coaches, and each team boasts plenty of talent.

The Lions have never played in the league's opening game. Kansas City's most recent appearance, meanwhile, came in 2020 when it was coming off its Super Bowl LIV victory.

The Chiefs finished 14-3 last season, and defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35, to claim the Lombardi Trophy.

Detroit used an 8-2 finish to close 2022 with a 9-8 record. It was the team's first winning mark since 2017.

Rumors of the two teams playing in Germany surfaced in the early parts of the offseason. However, the Chiefs will host the Dolphins instead during their international game.

The full schedule release is set for 8 p.m. Thursday evening.
