Lions Climb in Preseason NFL Power Rankings

A review of 2023 NFL preseason power rankings.
In this story:

Let’s explore where the media has the Detroit Lions ranked in its latest power rankings, after three weeks of training camp.

ESPN

Power ranking: 10th

"Expectations are high in Detroit, and the Lions have reassured Goff that he is their guy. With that being said, it would be a disappointment if the Lions don't reach the postseason after narrowly missing the playoffs in 2022. The Lions finished the season with eight wins in their last 10 games, and Goff's strong play was a major factor -- but they'll need him to be consistent all season in his third year in Detroit. He'll have to produce if he hopes to lock down a long-term deal. Goff is signed through 2024, but the team also drafted Hendon Hooker in the third round of April's draft, so the future isn't so clear for him in Detroit."

Power ranking: 15th

"Brian Branch primarily played nickel back in his time at Alabama, and following the trade of Jeffrey Okudah, it seems as if that role in Detroit is his for the taking. This would allow Emmanuel Moseley to stick outside and provide Detroit with a versatile group of defensive backs between Branch, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and Kerby Joseph."

Power ranking: 14th

"The Detroit Lions didn’t have an impressive 2023 NFL Draft, but it came after efficient use of their cap space in NFL free agency. We expect this defense to take a step forward next season, at times playing like an above-average unit. With the offense maintaining its top-10 form, the Lions are the best team in the NFC North."

Power ranking: 11th

"For the first time in what feels like ages, it looks like Detroit has some actual, real depth on defense. Peering beyond the clear-cut standouts, such as second-year edge Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions appear to have some tough decisions to make on who starts and who plays what role. The additions of CB Cam Sutton and especially versatile DBs C.J. Gardner-Johnson and rookie Brian Branch give DC Aaron Glenn some real flexibility on the back end. The first-round selection of Jack Campbell appears to have pushed 2022 rookie standout Malcolm Rodriguez into a leaner role. Up front, guys like Charles Harris and Josh Paschal could be pleasant surprises after tough 2022 seasons. It's another reason to be excited about Detroit this season."

Power ranking: 9th

The benefit of the preseason is allowing the coaching staff to discover what it needs to about several players on the lower end of the depth chart

Detroit's rookie class has performed at a high level all throughout training camp

The last preseason game, though, revealed a need to continue evaluating players along the offensive line, at wide receiver and at cornerback, to ensure the depth is at the appropriate level prior to the start of the season
