Emmanuel Moseley Not at Training Camp, Will Be Placed on PUP List

Emmanuel Moseley's recovery will likely take longer than expected.

Detroit Lions defensive back Emmanuel Moseley will start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, Lions coach Dan Campbell explained.

In his first training camp press conference of the 2023 season, Detroit's third-year head coach said the cornerback was not yet at training camp and would start the season on the inactive list as he continues to recover from a torn ACL.

"Moseley is not here yet, he will be," Campbell explained. "He's excused, he will start on PUP when he arrives, and it's probably going to be longer than we hoped for. That's really predicated on the work that was going. He was progressing so fast, so we're gonna put the brakes on. I don't want to say set-back, but it'll be a little bit longer."

Moseley suffered the injury in Week 5 of the 2022 season, while playing for the San Francisco 49ers. He signed a one-year deal with Detroit in the offseason.

The sixth-year defender is expected to compete for the starting position once he's activated.

'It's about work'

The Lions and their ascension in 2022 was one of the most popular stories of the offseason. Many pundits have placed high expectations on the organization in 2023.

As training camp begins, however, the third-year coach isn't allowing his team to rest on the laurels set for them.

"Everything I told them was about work, it's about the work. I've said that from day one, and it'll always be the same message. It's about work," Campbell said. "That's what we do. You've got to go earn your right every year. It doesn't matter what the players are, the coaches, expectations, where you were, where you're going. We've gotta work, man, and so this is day one of that."

The team has confidence from previous seasons, but its performance in 2023 will be decided by the work it puts in.

"That always helps, but I like to believe two years ago, those guys thought they could go out and do something. You should always, as a competitor, think that you can go out there and hold your own," the Lions head man stated. "You're always gonna have a little bit of a feel of, 'Okay, here we are.' Especially the guys that have been here. They believe in the message, believe in the work. So, you're gonna have a level of confidence. As always, you have to be careful, if that's all you buy into is talk and everything else that you read."

Notes

1.) Levi Onwuzurike, who has been slowly working his way back from a back injury, will not start training camp on the PUP list, and will be out at the team's practice facility in his efforts to return to action.

2.) The first four days of training camp are likely to be used as an acclimation period, to aid the team in getting its legs underneath it.

3.) Offseason acquisition Marvin Jones Jr., who will be embarking on his second stint in Detroit, has been added to the NFI (non-football injury) list.
