Lions' Front Office Excited to Add More Players
After defeating the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes had an opportunity to reflect on the season the team just completed.
Sitting on the team plane, Detroit's second-year general manager felt a level of excitement, as he realized the team he was instrumental in building had won six more games than the season prior and has ample opportunities to get even better.
The Lions currently sit with nearly $18 million in cap space and a significant amount of draft capital, with Holmes and Co. having two first-round picks in the upcoming draft.

Holmes expressed this week, "On the plane going back, yeah, I was excited. I was like, ‘Man, it’s time to get players now.’ And, that just gives me juices, man, when that opportunity and those windows come up. It’s exciting to have the capital that we have. Obviously, made some moves, probably some that weren’t popular among people outside this building. But, just like I say all the time, 'We do every single thing for a reason. Every single thing is well thought out. Every single thing is well planned.'"
With his first two draft classes producing at a high level, there is reason for optimism that building through the draft will stockpile the roster with young talent that will produce now and in the future.
"All these young guys we’ve got are just continuing to -- they all took a step up," Lions head coach Dan Campbell said. "They all took a step up, and that’s on top of the steady forces of (Frank) Ragnow, Jonah (Jackson), (Taylor) Decker, and Alex (Anzalone) being back again. So, our veterans were really a solid force for us once again, and it’s a good combination right now. And, there again, we’ll only improve on this roster.”
Even though the team has not been too aggressive signing other team's free agents, if a player is deemed to be a fit, the team will not be hesitant to add players via free agency.
"We’re not in a position to be knee-jerk or impulsive. We’re not in a position to fold the tents. No, that doesn’t even touch the surface of what our thinking is," Holmes expressed. "So, it’s good to have the capital, and I always say, 'You can have all the picks you want, you better pick them right.' But, we have confidence in our process that we’ll do that.”
