Lions Had 'Dialogue' with Jared Goff's Agent about New Contract
Detroit's Lions quarterback Jared Goff is entering a pivotal season for an organization looking to take significant strides forward.
Speaking with 97.1 The Ticket following the draft, Detroit general manager Brad Holmes was asked if the organization was nearing a new contract extension with Goff.
"We've had (internal) dialogue there," said Holmes. "We've had dialogue with his agent, and we're in a good place right now."
Goff, 28, still has two years remaining on his current deal.
Detroit could decide to start the process of reworking a deal for its current signal-caller.
According to the Free Press, it is believed the organization is trending towards awarding Goff a new contract in the next 15 months.
Speculation regarding Goff's future has started to increase, especially after the team decided to draft Hendon Hooker.
One aspect that could expedite his transition into becoming an NFL starter is his age.
"I mean you’re mindful of it," said Holmes. "You don’t ignore it, but we look at the positive part of that, and the quarterback position, it entails maturity. I think that’s the positive thing you’re getting when you’re dealing with a quarterback, is that him being 25, he’s a mature young man, and he showed us that throughout this process. You’re aware of it, and you understand it. But, it really wasn’t a deterrent in our decision.”
Holmes has reiterated on numerous occasions that Goff is the team's starter and there is not any added pressure on Hooker to perform or play before he is ready.
