Detroit Lions Have Simple Expectations for Jameson Williams
The Detroit Lions received positive news on Friday with the NFL shortening Jameson Williams' suspension from six to four games.
As a result, the Alabama product is expected to return to team practice Monday.
As it prepares for the Carolina Panthers in Week 5, Dan Campbell's team will have the ability to evaluate how ready Williams is to return to action.
On Monday, Detroit's third-year head coach laid out the expectations for the talented wideout this week, as well as for the 2023 season.
"Honestly, for me, it's dependability," Campbell explained. "That's it. Reliability, dependability, getting lined up, knowing where you're supposed to be. We're gonna get the depth out of you, and we can count on you to be where you're supposed to be when you're supposed to be there. That's it. I'm not looking for yards, not looking for explosives, not looking for touchdowns. Man, just be a reliable receiver, like any of those guys in the room. That's it and to me, that's a good year. Because we're about winning, it's not about one player, and that will help us win."
Roundtable: How Many Targets Should Jameson Williams Get Week 5
As for the plans this week, the coach said it's too early to tell what Williams' role will be against Carolina. The Alabama product is currently viewed as day-to-day, as the team plans to measure his workload after seeing him perform in practice.
"He just needs to come in, and I'm not worried about him working, he will. It's just about polishing all the little things, and we also know if he does play, he can't play 60 plays, that's not smart," Campbell explained. "We can't do that to him. So, we'll see where it goes. It's all about improvement, no different than the rest of the team. Every week, we've just got to get a little bit better. He just needs to get a little bit better, and we'll go from there."
Notes
1.) Emmanuel Moseley will continue to see more practice time, as Dan Campbell hopes to get the cornerback into game action on Sunday. Should he play, it would be his Lions debut, after signing with the team as a free agent this offseason.
"We believe (he) will make us better. He's another guy we'd like to see if we can get going this week," Campbell stated. "There again, if he does, he's a guy where we don't feel like it'd be smart to play him 60 plays, either. But, he's certainly somebody that we feel like, alright, let's get a look at this week. Feel like the time's right, and he'll get a little bit. Jerry will still certainly take the load, but I think the plan is to get 'E-man' worked in."
2.) Campbell said the injury status of players such as Kerby Joseph, Brian Branch and Taylor Decker is still uncertain as the team begins the week.
3.) Wide receiver Mike Harley worked out for the Lions, but was not immediately signed to a contract.
