The veteran coach has also served as the offensive coordinator at Maryland and the head coach at East Carolina University. From 2014-2015, Montgomery served as an assistant at Duke.
Similar to other coaches on the Lions' staff, Montgomery is a former NFL player who played for the Panthers, Broncos and Raiders.
He entered the NFL in 2000 as an undrafted free agent, after playing wide receiver collegiately at Duke.
In 2005, he played for the Georgia Force in the Arena Football League.
The 2022 season saw the Lions' rushing attack steadily improve under Staley's watch.
Detroit even had its first 1,000-yard rusher in several seasons, as Jamaal Williams had a breakout campaign.
The veteran running back set the team record with 17 rushing touchdowns in his second campaign in Motown.
Following the conclusion of the season, Staley decided to leave the Lions to join the coaching staff of Frank Reich with the Carolina Panthers.
