Report: Lions Will Hire John Fox as Senior Defensive Consultant
The Detroit Lions have not had a senior defensive consultant since Dom Capers departed the organization, following the conclusion of the 2021 NFL season.
During the Dan Campbell era, the Lions' defense has not put up consistently strong defensive numbers, resulting in low league rankings.
The second half of the 2022 season saw the defense start to perform at a higher level, following the infusion of younger talent.
According to ESPN, the team has decided to bring aboard John Fox to serve as another resource in its attempt to retool the defense and bring the performance to a level that can help the team more.
Fox, 68, is reportedly becoming the Lions' next senior defensive consultant, working with the staff to meet the elevated goals heading into 2023.
The former NFL head coach brings with him 16 years of head coaching experience, as he previously led the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears.
In January of 2002, Fox was named as the third-ever head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
In 2003, Fox led the Panthers to Super Bowl XXXVIII, losing, 32–29, to the New England Patriots.
Fox served as the head coach of the Broncos from 2011-2014, before taking upon his final head coaching position with the Bears (2015-2017).
The 68-year-old also was a defensive consultant for the Indianapolis Colts last season.
