Lions' Justin Jackson Placed on Retired List, RB Signed, OL Waived

Justin Jackson being placed on the retired list is a surprise roster move.

The Detroit Lions announced a series of roster moves ahead of their initial preseason game against the New York Giants.

Veteran Justin Jackson, who was a special teams contributor last season and a likely contender to earn the No. 3 running back spot again this season, was placed on the reserve/retired list.

Jackson, who previously had a stint with the Los Angeles Chargers, was in competition with Mohamed Ibrahim, Craig Reynolds and Jermar Jefferson for a spot on the roster.

Detroit head coach Dan Campbell expressed, when the team decided to bring the veteran back to the roster, "As you go through spring and you make these moves and you’re looking at the roster, you go through the offseason, and we’ve kind of always kept in contact with him from afar. But, once the dust clears and you kind of step back, it just made sense. He did a number of things for us last year. He’s a good special teams player. He’s a reliable third back for us, in the run and pass game. I mean there was -- it got to the point where he was doing one or two critical things a game to help us, and so it just made sense, both parties, his and ours."

In a corresponding move, the team announced the signing of running back Benny Snell.

Snell, 25, played collegiately at Kentucky, and is a former fourth-round NFL draft pick. He had a prior stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2019-2022. In his career, he has recorded 982 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

With the emergence of rookie Colby Sorsdal and the team making the signing of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater official, offensive lineman Logan Stenberg became expendable.

As expected, the signing of Bridgewater is now official, and the veteran quarterback will likely join the team for practice next week.
