Lions Played Man Coverage at Second-Highest Rate in NFL

Detroit Lions are still seeking improvements in their secondary.

The Detroit Lions played man coverage in the secondary at the second-highest rate in the National Football League in 2022.

When in man coverage, the team allowed the third-most yards per attempts, as opponents were able to gain 7.6 yards per attempt.

As a result, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and the front office will be doing their due diligence on the significant number of defensive backs the team could target in the upcoming draft.

Draft prospects Christian Gonzalez, Devon Witherspoon and Joey Porter Jr. could all be on the Lions' radar on Day 1 of the draft.

Detroit returns Jerry Jacobs and Jeff Okudah, who is seeking to rebound after a disappointing finish to his 2022 season.

After an early start to the season that saw flashes of why the team selected him with the No. 3 overall pick, his play in the second half of the season eventually resulted in the former Buckeyes cornerback being limited to a role on special teams.

If Okudah's play is not where it needs to be, the team likely will not pick up his fifth-year option. It makes 2023 a critical season that could end up being the defensive back's last in Motown.

The team could also look to free agency to shore up the secondary. Cameron Sutton of the Steelers and James Bradberry of the Eagles could be interesting options for Glenn and the Lions' coaching staff.

According to NFL.com, "With four defensive linemen, four linebackers and six defensive backs set to become free agents, the Lions have an opportunity to completely overhaul the unit. Improving their run defense is a must after registering a league-low 52.4 percent defensive success rate against the run last season."
