The Detroit Lions have reportedly created an additional $4.5 million in salary cap space by restructuring the contract of cornerback Carlton Davis.

Following being dealt to Detroit, the team converted $6 million of his salary into a signing bonus and added void years to the contract, in order to spread out the overall cap hit the team would incur.

The veteran expressed his excitement at the potential of being part of an NFL team that is on the rise.

Davis, 27, won a Super Bowl with legendary quarterback Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back in 2020.

Winning a Lombardi Trophy gave him a clear vision of what a team needs to win at the highest levels, qualities he believes the current Lions' roster possesses.

The talented defensive back was entering the final season of his contract and was set to earn $14 million this year.

When asked by local reporters, Davis indicated he was open to signing an extension with Detroit, but needed to "get my feet wet" before being willing to entertain those type of contract discussions.

Davis was quite impressed by the playoff atmosphere at Ford Field, as Lions' fans were loud and supportive in Detroit's playoff victory against his former team.

“It was so loud. Just even coming into the stadium, we knew that we would have to go against the team and the fans. The city was just crazy that day," Davis said. “The dome was so loud, and I’ve played in some pretty loud arenas and stadiums but that was definitely top three of my career.”
