Report: Lions Had Interest in Trey Lance
The Detroit Lions appear set at quarterback with Jared Goff as the starter and Teddy Bridgewater as the backup.
Upon being activated from the non-football injury (NFI) list, rookie Hendon Hooker will also factor into the conversation under center.
However, the team reportedly showed interest in another passer that was recently available on the trade market. Trey Lance, who was eventually dealt to the Dallas Cowboys, was a quarterback that Brad Holmes and company showed interest in.
According to a report from The Athletic, the Lions looked into trading for the former No. 3 overall pick. Lance was a prospect with intriguing skills coming out of North Dakota State, but has struggled to make good on them since entering the NFL.
The report stated that offers made by most teams involved a fifth-or-sixth-round pick, but Dallas ultimately made the best offer.
Had the Lions made the move, they would've been in an interesting position at quarterback, given the signal-callers already on their roster. He likely would've competed with Bridgewater for the backup spot throughout the regular season.
Recently, Lance fell out of favor with the San Francisco 49ers. Brock Purdy, a seventh-round pick in last year's draft, has emerged as the 49ers' starter this summer.
Sam Darnold, meanwhile, beat Lance out for the backup job. As a result, Lance was dealt to the Cowboys for a mid-round pick.
Lance has played eight NFL games since being drafted, with four starts. He's passed for 797 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions, while compiling a 2-2 record as a starter.
Last season, his campaign ended prematurely, after suffering an injury in the second game of the year. He has a connection to the Lions, as he threw his first career touchdown pass against the team in his NFL debut, in Week 1 of the 2021 season.
