Lions Sign CB Mac McCain
The Detroit Lions announced a roster signing, just ahead of the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine.
On Thursday, the team announced the signing of cornerback Mac McCain.
The 25-year-old defensive back played collegiately at North Carolina A&T.
As a freshman, McCain started 12 games, and recorded six interceptions (three of which were returned for touchdowns).
Throughout college, McCain battled injuries, and had his junior season end prematurely after appearing in nine games. He finished his junior season with 26 tackles and no interceptions.
He did not play in 2020, as the season was canceled due to the global pandemic.
In 2021, McCain signed with the Denver Broncos after going undrafted.
The young defensive back is inexperienced in regular season contests, and has spent a significant portion of his career on the practice squad.
Since 2021, he has had two stints with each the Broncos and the Eagles.
Just prior to the start of the 2022 season, McCain was waived by the Eagles, and re-signed to the team's practice squad.
He was released from the practice squad in November, but ended up back on the practice squad a week later.
The Lions' secondary is likely in need of additional depth and competition headed into OTAs and training camp.
With Jerry Jacobs and Jeff Okudah likely to take starting roles, the team is expected to add a defensive back in the upcoming draft.
Several early mock drafts have the Lions targeting Devon Witherspoon, Christian Gonzalez and Joey Porter Jr. in early rounds.
Will Harris is a potential player who could depart in free agency, and the team is seeking to improve upon its defensive efforts in 2022.
