Studs and Duds: Goff, Offense Miserable in Second Half
The Detroit Lions struggled to get going on both sides of the ball, trailing, 10-0, early in Sunday's game.
Then, they came to life and dominated the second quarter. So much so, that they scored 13 unanswered to take a 13-10 lead into halftime. After the break, though, the Lions were unable to generate any momentum.
While their offense went three-and-out on three straight possessions, the defense crumbled. The Bears shut the Lions out in the second half, and rallied to win convincingly, 28-13.
Here are the studs and duds from Sunday's game.
DUD: LB Alex Anzalone
After undergoing surgery on his thumb and missing last week, Anzalone returned to action. He got off to a very rough start, missing a tackle on the second play of the game on a short pass to D'Onta Foreman.
Anzalone would later come up empty on a sack attempt. His struggles came to a head when he was penalized on back-to-back plays on Chicago's third possession, once for defensive holding and once for unnecessary roughness.
STUD: RB Jahmyr Gibbs
Gibbs had his flashes of potential once again on Sunday, rushing 11 times for 66 yards and a score. David Montgomery posted an identical total on 10 carries, giving the Lions some life on the ground.
Gibbs had a 36-yard run on Detroit's second drive, which would end on a fourth-down interception by Jared Goff. Later in the first half, he scored the first touchdown of the game, on a 12-yard toss.
The rookie did have a costly drop on a third-down screen pass. Had he hauled it in, the play may have gone for a score based on the blocking. Additionally, he was stone-walled for a loss on a fourth-and-1 rushing attempt.
DUD: WR Amon-Ra St. Brown
St. Brown was off his game Sunday, struggling to make an impact against a Bears team that was clearly keyed in on slowing him down. The USC product finished with three catches for 21 yards (on nine targets).
The third-year wideout has been praised for his strong hands, but he had two costly drops on the Lions' penultimate drive in the fourth quarter. First, he failed to corral a pass that hit him in the hands.
Later in the drive, with the offense facing a key fourth down, he couldn't bring in a pass that was thrown low despite a diving attempt.
STUD: DE John Cominsky
Cominsky was among the defensive leaders Sunday, finishing with seven tackles. He had one sack, and nearly assisted on another with Aidan Hutchinson. Cominsky also had two quarterback hits.
The Lions' defensive line was able to put pressure on Justin Fields throughout the afternoon, but struggled to contain him. The dual-threat passer ran for 58 yards and a score.
Hutchinson, who recorded a sack for the first time since the last time these two teams met, also committed a costly offsides penalty that led directly to the Bears' go-ahead touchdown.
Lions Ice Cold in Baffling 28-13 Loss to Bears
DUD: QB Jared Goff
For the third time in four games, Jared Goff committed three turnovers in a game. It was the second time this season that he did so against the Bears, this time throwing two interceptions and fumbling a snap.
There were concerns about the weather and elements leading into Sunday's game, and Goff didn't handle the situation to the best of his ability. He finished with 161 passing yards, while completing 57 percent of his passes.
His lack of mobility was also exposed by Chicago's pass-rush, as he was sacked four times. Among those were two sacks on Detroit's final drive.
STUD: WR Josh Reynolds
Reynolds hauled in three passes for a team-high 44 yards Sunday, including his fourth touchdown of the season. His score came late in the first half, and gave the team the lead heading into the locker room.
Reynolds also had an impressive 27-yard grab on a fourth-quarter possession. But, the drive ultimately flamed out.
DUD: CB Jerry Jacobs
The Lions held wide receiver DJ Moore mostly in check for the first half, as he did not have a catch in the first two quarters. However, the wide receiver and Fields revived their connection in the second half.
This came to a key point in the third quarter, with the Bears facing a fourth-and-13. Aidan Hutchinson jumped offsides, and Jacobs was beaten badly on a deep ball from Fields to Moore, resulting in a touchdown. The Bears would never relinquish the lead.
Jacobs split reps with newcomer Kindle Vildor, who made his Lions debut Sunday. Vildor finished with three tackles, with one coming for loss.
