Lions to Discuss Amon-Ra St. Brown Extension at NFL Combine
Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes has made it a priority to draft, develop and eventually re-sign young talent for the organization.
With this year marking his fourth in the position, Holmes will now have the decision to re-sign members of his initial Draft class. One of those is wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who was drafted in the fourth round by the organization.
The Lions will meet with St. Brown's agent at the NFL Scouting Combine this week to discuss a potential extension, per the Detroit Free Press. The wideout has quickly emerged as one of the best at his position in the entire league, and could command a hefty commitment.
Last season, St. Brown was named a first-team All-Pro after hauling in 119 passes for 1,515 yards and 10 touchdowns. In his first three seasons, he has totaled 315 receptions for 3,588 yards and 21 scores.
He has yet to make over $1 million in salary in a year, but is set to make $3.4 million in 2024.
St. Brown is viewed as a cornerstone player for the franchise, along with fellow 2021 draftee Penei Sewell and quarterback Jared Goff. The Lions are widely expected to pick up Sewell's fifth-year option ahead of the 2024 season, while Goff is also heading into the final year of his contract.
Currently, the Lions have the eighth-most cap space amongst NFL teams heading into the 2024 offseason. However, long-term commitments that they make this offseason could cut into available funds for future extensions such as St. Brown's.
The NFL's current top-paid wideout is Miami's Tyreek Hill, who earns $30 million on average after signing a four-year, $120 million deal. While St. Brown likely won't re-set the market, he's expected to be rewarded well for his performance.
