Detroit Lions Trade No. 6 Pick
The Detroit Lions have decided not to remain at the No. 6 position in the 2023 NFL Draft.
After the Seattle Seahawks surprised many by selecting cornerback Devon Witherspoon, general manager Brad Holmes decided it was in the best interest of the organization to trade down.
Detroit sent the No. 6 and No. 81 overall selections to Arizona for picks No. 12, No. 34 and No. 168 overall.
With the sixth pick, the Cardinals went on to select offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. out of Ohio State.
Holmes had expressed challenges in terms of finding a cluster of players that the team liked, like in years past.
Once Witherspoon was off the board, the decision to trade down was likely much easier.
"I just don’t feel like we’re pressed," said Holmes. "And when I say that, I’m not saying we have a perfect roster. Nothing like that. Actually, I’m in the mindset of – look, if you think you’re set and you think you’re done and you can go anywhere – I mean, if you take your foot off the gas, you can have problems lurking down the road. So, we’re just being thorough. We’ll be prepared. But, I do like the fact that we can pretty much go any direction we want, and we can feel pretty good about it, just get the right football player for us.”
As a result of the trade, the Lions will now have five picks in the top 55 of this year's draft.
