Lions UDFA Watch: DL Chris Smith Is 'Technician'
Detroit Lions undrafted rookie free agent Chris Smith impressed defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and new defensive line coach John Scott Jr. throughout the offseason workout program.
After starting his collegiate career at Harvard, the 310-pound lineman finished his collegiate career at Notre Dame.
Scott told reporters, when asked about the undrafted free agents on the roster, "Yeah, I’ve been very impressed with those two big inside guys that we brought in. Very impressed with those guys."
A review of film sees Smith showcasing initial burst and quickness and an ability to shed blocks during battles with opposing offensive lineman.
"When you watch Chris’ tape, Chris is a technician, man. He does some things naturally that we don’t even have to coach here as far as like block recognition, block destruction. It comes to him very natural," Scott said. "He learned that at Notre Dame and that has served him well. He’s done a nice job since he’s been out here, too."
At OTA's, Smith showcased he was able to move well for his size, but will likely need to add size and strength to become more stout when asked to play along the interior.
"He’s kind of a quiet guy a little bit, so you got to prod him. But, he’s a great guy and he works his tail off, just always trying to go that extra mile and do it exactly how you want it," Scott explained. "Very coachable kid. He’s been a pleasure to have in the room so far."
UDFA Cory Durden was the other defensive lineman who has stood out at OTAs.
