Former Lions Coach Matt Patricia Joins Eagles as Defensive Assistant
Former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia has now been officially hired by the Philadelphia Eagles.
After his latest stint working with the Patriots' offense, Patricia will join the staff of Nick Sirianni as a senior defensive assistant.
Many are now awaiting how veteran cornerback Darius Slay will react to the news.
During his stint in Detroit, the former Super Bowl-winning defensive coordinator did not take too kindly to the young cornerback working out with Richard Sherman and Aqib Talib during the offseason.
“He basically just said, ‘You are not in that category yet,’” Slay said at this past season's Super Bowl. “At that time, I only had one Pro Bowl, but now I’m at five. So, I want to know how he feels about that now. I don’t wish bad on him, but as a man, me and him just don’t get along. He’s a smart coach, he knows his X's and O's, but the disrespect is not what I’m with.”
Patricia had a failed stint as head coach of the Lions, following one of the more successful coaches in franchise history in Jim Caldwell.
After multiple playoff appearances, former general manager Bob Quinn decided to part ways with Caldwell and hired Patricia in 2018.
Both Quinn and Patricia were dismissed prior to the conclusion of the 2020 season.
