Odds Lions Beat Cowboys in Week 17
Get your popcorn ready. The Detroit Lions will square off with Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys in a highly anticipated matchup Saturday night at AT&T Stadium.
The Lions, which clinched the NFC North division crown on Christmas Eve against Minnesota, cannot afford to be complacent against the Cowboys.
Dallas, which sits at 10-5 and in second place in the NFC East, is the definition of a well-rounded team.
It features both a top-five offense and a top-five defense – No. 2 in points scored (30.1 per game) and No. 5 in points allowed (19.1 per contest). Additionally, the Cowboys are the only present NFL team averaging over 30 points a game and holding opponents to less than 20 points per game.
Perhaps even more impressively, the Mike McCarthy-coached team is a perfect 7-0 at home thus far this season.
And if you go back even further, Dallas actually hasn't lost a game at “Jerry World” since Week 1 of last season (a 19-3 loss to the Buccaneers). In case you were wondering, the Cowboys’ home-winning streak spans 15 total games.
This is a credit to McCarthy, but also to the countless number of playmakers the team possesses on both sides of the football.
Defensively, the Cowboys are led by two-time All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons and defensive back DaRon Bland.
Parsons has amassed a team-high 13 sacks, along with a staggering 15 tackles for loss and 30 total QB hits, in 15 games this season. Meanwhile, Bland, also in 15 games, has recorded a league-high eight interceptions, including an NFL single-season record five returned for touchdown.
Offensively, Dallas is spearheaded by its Pro Bowl quarterback-receiver tandem of Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.
'Fired Up' Hutchinson Aims to Break Cowboys’ Home Win Streak
Prescott, who currently owns the third-best QBR among all qualified passers (71.5), has thrown for 3,892 yards, 30 touchdowns and just seven interceptions so far in 15 games. He's done all this while completing a solid 68.4 percent of his passes.
Meanwhile, Lamb has been a beast all season long. The Oklahoma product has also suited up for 15 games, and has compiled an NFL-best 109 receptions, to go along with a career-high 1,424 yards and nine touchdowns. And, he's done all this while hauling in a career-best 72.2 percent of his targets from Prescott.
Fair to say, the Cowboys are a formidable opponent, and won't be easy for Detroit to beat in primetime Saturday.
Yet, if there's an area for the Lions to exploit, it would be the Cowboys' rush defense.
Entering this Week 17 matchup, Dallas has allowed the 14th-most yards on the ground (1,735) and the 15th-most rushing yards per attempt (4.2).
This area of weakness for the Cowboys was significantly exploited two weeks ago against the Buffalo Bills. In the aforementioned Week 15 contest, Dallas allowed a season-high 266 total rushing yards to the Bills.
Subsequently, Detroit's running back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery should have a chance of producing a solid day on the ground this weekend.
At this present juncture, I'll give the Lions a 47 percent chance to capture the Week 17 victory.
