Free Agency Rumors: Lions among Seven Teams Interested in Top CB
The Detroit Lions are reportedly among seven NFL teams vying for the services of Kansas City Chiefs cornerback L'Jarius Sneed.
According to USA Today, "A person with direct knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports that the Minnesota Vikings, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots, Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars have expressed interest in the Chiefs corner. The person told USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation."
Detroit has an extra third-round draft pick this season, and could decide to pull the trigger on adding one of the top defensive backs available this offseason.
It is clear the team is retooling its cornerbacks room, as Jerry Jacobs has been informed he is not being offered a restricted free agent contract tender. It spells the likely end of his tenure in Motown.
A clear issue standing in the way of Detroit's front office making the deal is the long-term financial commitment likely required for Sneed.
Sneed and his camp are likely seeking north of $20 million annually.
Along with draft compensation, general manger Brad Holmes and the front office may decide the cost is too great, given the upcoming opportunity to add cornerbacks in the draft.
Jerry Jacobs "forever grateful"
Jacobs endeared himself to the Lions based on his work ethic.
After finding out the team's future plans, Jacobs took to social media to thank the organization for giving him the opportunity to play in the NFL.
Jacobs posted, "Forever thankful for Detroit I swear giving a kid from Atlanta Ga a chance at the biggest stage of football I would never forget thank you for letting a kid from Atlanta ga shine I will always cherish that city you help me become my dream .. Forever Grateful, Jerry Jacobs."
