What Derek Carr's New Saints Contract Means for Jared Goff
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is still under contract for the next two seasons.
The veteran signal-caller has a cap hit in 2023 of $30,975,000 and $31,650,064 the following year.
Derek Carr, who was cut by the Las Vegas Raiders before just north of $40 million in guaranteed monies would kick in, has reportedly signed a four-year, $150 million deal with the New Orleans Saints.
Carr will end up earning at least $60 million guaranteed (with a chance to earn up to $100 million), and has a full no-trade clause, similar to his last contract with the Raiders.
Goff will now likely be in the same neighborhood as Carr, with an average annual value of $37.5 million, if he can achieve continued success in Motown.
After working with Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson in 2022, Goff had one of his best statistical seasons of his career. The offense was tailored to highlight his ability to read defenses and make quick decisions.
With an elite offensive line and the likely emergence of speedy wideout Jameson Williams in 2023, Goff is poised to set new career benchmarks this upcoming season.
The Lions are currently betting favorites to win the NFC North, setting up the potential of a home playoff game.
With Goff under center, the team has a legitimate opportunity to have its best season in the past decade.
If the 28-year-old quarterback can lead Detroit to a playoff win, a long-term contract extension could be in the works (and as soon as next offseason).
Another offer to watch for in the coming days will be that of New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, who is reportedly seeking north of $40 million annually.
In the end, Goff has all the incentives he needs to perform at the highest level this upcoming season, as a hefty, new contract is just around the corner.
