What They're Saying: Aidan Hutchinson Overcomes Frustrations

What Lions players and coaches are saying after Week 3 win.
In this story:

Here is a collection of quotes from Detroit Lions players and coaches following their Week 3 win over the Atlanta Falcons:

Dan Campbell

On adjusting the lineup due to injuries and 'Next Man Up' mentality: "We talk about it all the time, and that's really defensively too. We had Nelson and then Skip's gotta come in and then Sorsdal's gotta come in. Defense, we don't have Kerby, I thought Iffy made some plays today at safety, he's never really played very much at safety, he's been repping there a little bit so that was encouraging. But we talk about it all the time, it's next man up. That's a credit to Brad and the depth that we have on this team in areas and it's paying dividends. But no, it's not easy, it's not easy for anybody. Those guys stepped up and competed and that O-line took care of, they were making sure we were taking care of Sorsdal. And he battled out there, he really did. Backs ran hard, and we did what we needed to do to control that game. Look, when you lose a couple of tackles in a game, that's not easy. When you're without a few pieces, that's not always easy for Ben to call a game like that when you're missing a few things here and there. I thought he did a heck of a job calling the game, I thought that Goff stepped in there and made some big throws, played tough. I thought the backs ran hard and the O-line, just, they kept pounding away and we were finally able to break it away at the end of the game. So it was definitely a team effort."

Aidan Hutchinson

On how he was tested mentally after being held without a sack each of the last two games: "This game really did test my mental toughness. It's hard when you feel like you're playing at a high level but the production doesn't come. So it's frustrating, that's the game of football. I thought I had to get a little mentally tough today. You're so proud of the boys for producing, so proud of the boys for getting after it and I also wanted to be a part of it. So it took some mental toughness, but this game is four quarters. Had to play til the end."

Alex Anzalone

How it felt winning at home after last week's loss: "Good. I feel like we needed it. It's fun to do that for the fans and especially being at home. We wanted to win at home and that's what we did."

Tracy Walker III

On how the defense felt bouncing back from last week's loss: "It's not how you start it's always how you finish. It just goes to show that we came back to work this week and we wanted to bounce back and show everybody that last week was a fluke."

Sam LaPorta

On how the defense performed in Sunday's game: "They did an ubeliveable job today, a lot of credit to them. We stalled out on a couple drives, quick three-and-outs which we're not looking for. We're gonna have to address that and get better, but in terms of the defense they did unbelievable, definitely carried their way today and just happy for them."

Colby Sorsdal

How he felt entering the game at right tackle after moving to guard in the preseason: "You've always got to be prepared to get your name called for whatever position that might be. I knew I was ready to go regardless, if it was right guard, left guard, right tackle whatever. It ended up being right tackle and I played right tackle my whole college career, so it was like riding a bike. I got in there and the rest was history and it was awesome."

Jared Goff

On his interception and whether he felt like he was pressing: "No, the interception, he's wide open, I've got to hit him all day long. I don't know if I've ever missed like that. It's just a crappy throw and we can laugh about it now because we won. But crappy throw, put our defense in a tough spot and they were able to get the ball back for us and pick me up. I think that's what good teams do, though. You're gonna have bad plays. We're gonna have to pick up our defense at times, they're gonna have to pick up me at times and that's what we did today. When our defense is playing as well as they are, we don't feel the need to press as much. We knew we were in control of that game, we knew our defense was playing as well as you guys saw they were. We had plenty of chances to finish it off there."

Brian Branch

On the importance of stopping Atlanta's run game: "Stopping the run was a big emphasis for us this week. Atlanta's a good team that runs the ball. They run the ball 70 percent of the time and the fact that we stopped the run the whole game shows a lot about us. The front set the tone early, the linebackers shooting the gaps and then the DBs, when they passed the ball, we stopped it."
