Detroit Lions' Week 2 Defensive Grades: Burn the Film
If Matt Patricia's job did not entail reviewing what actually occurred on the football field, it may not be that much of a stretch to recommend he simply burns the tape of his team's performance at Lambeau Field.
Anybody watching or reviewing the game tape will cringe at the sheer number of mistakes and mental errors that took place in Detroit's 42-21 loss to the Packers.
Here are the grades for the Lions' defense after the team's Week 2 contest with Green Bay.
Defensive line: F
Aaron Rodgers simply sat back, and picked apart Detroit's defense.
If the plan was not to hang rookie Jeff Okudah and second-year pro Amani Oruwariye out to dry, there should have been significantly more pressure dialed up to rush the future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback's decision-making.
Instead, the Lions' defensive front generated zero pressure, and Rodgers made Detroit's secondary look ridiculous time and time again.
Green Bay running back Aaron Jones was always going to present a challenge, but for Detroit's defensive line to allow 259 yards of combined rushing yards is simply absurd.
Linebackers: F
Jahlani Tavai has regressed. Jarrad Davis simply does not belong out on the football field as much as he is.
Rookie Julian Okwara was a healthy scratch. He may have been the luckiest member of the roster since he did not have the opportunity to put terrible play on film to be reviewed.
Jarrad Davis and Jamie Collins were embarrassingly wiped out by Packers' blockers on Aaron Jones' touchdown run to start the third-quarter.
Secondary: F
For whatever reason, the communication issues that have plagued this secondary to start the season have become worse.
Rookie Jeff Okudah was picked on by Rodgers time and time again.
What was ultimately disappointing were the numerous unforced errors committed by Detroit's defensive backs.
Will Harris was simply disappointing. I do not recall ever seeing the same player being charged with back-to-back 15-yard penalties at the end of the first half.
His tackling was atrocious and his fundamentals were poor on Jones' long touchdown run.
Special teams: B+
Sam Martin who?
Jack Fox is among the very few bright spots on Detroit's defense, as he averaged 54.2 yards on his five punts Sunday.
