Bang The Table Podcast: Lions Week 3 Training Camp Review
No question, rookie defensive back Brian Branch and wide receiver Dylan Drummond have been the talk of Detroit Lions training camp.
Over the course of three weeks, both have made the case their place on the depth chart should improve, with Drummond being a strong contender to make the team and Branch making his case to be a Day 1 starter in Aaron Glenn's defense.
In the latest edition of the "Bang The Table" Lions podcast, Colton Pouncy of The Athletic shared his early impressions of the ex-Crimson Tide defensive back.
Pouncey expressed, "Branch is a player that, he was probably one of my favorite players in the draft last year, favorite defensive players at least. He's so versatile. Even going back to Alabama, if you can start as a true freshman for Nick Saban, you're probably going to end up being a pretty good player in this league.
"So, the fact that he's kind of coming along early in his career is not surprising to me," Pouncey explained further. "I actually kind of thought they could probably give him this sort of, not quite a redshirt year, but kind of let him learn from C.J. Gardner-Johnson at that nickel spot -- learn the ropes and maybe take over for him. If Gardner-Johnson leaves in free agency a year from now, I wondered if that would be the plan, just kind of bring him along slowly. They're throwing him right out there with the first-team. He's getting starting reps at nickel. Like you mentioned, they are playing Kerby Joseph and Gardner-Johnson back there at safety and having Branch there at the slot corner. So, the fact that they're showing these looks against another team, I think that's pretty telling."
