Bang The Table Podcast: 6 Risers, 3 Fallers Week 1 Lions Training Camp

New Bang the Table Detroit Lions podcast recaps the first week of training camp.
In this story:

The Detroit Lions' first week of training camp is now officially in the books, and the roster has acclimated to the summer practice schedule.

With pads coming on Friday, the team will now ramp up its workload in preparation for joint practices with the New York Giants.

Several players stood out and have elevated their stock, while a few have started to garner question marks regarding their role on the team.

The roster and coaching staff have showcased a sense of urgency, as the first preseason game is only a couple weeks away.

"I think every training camp, you go in optimistic about the direction of the unit you’re working with. It doesn’t matter if you’re quality control, position coach or coordinator," said Ben Johnson. "I think you’re always excited about where it could head and this is no different. But, just like Coach (Dan Campbell) and the players have been saying, it’s all about putting in the work right now. That’s really what it comes down to. We’ll peak up once the season starts and see where we’re at, but right now, we’ve got a long way to go to get (to) where we’re capable of going.”

For quarterback Jared Goff, who has performed well throughout the first week of training camp, working in Johnson's offense for a second season has been comfortable and productive.

Goff commented, "It’s a lot of fun. It’s really cool to be able to show up this week and even in OTAs and be like, ‘OK, we know the formations, we know the base stuff,’ and be able to, ‘Okay what are our tweaks, what can we get better at? What are the things that we really fell short of last year?’ And find ways to get even better.’”

Other players who stood out include defensive end Charles Harris, undrafted rookie free agent cornerback Starling Thomas, wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown, tight end Sam LaPorta and defensive back Brian Branch.

On the latest All Lions podcast, the early risers and fallers are discussed in detail.
